The Norwalk Hour

This all-encompassing green home was made nontoxic by its owner —also an interior designer.

Trudy Dujardin said she has allergies and a condition where she cannot be near toxins. Therefore, Dujardin, who purchased 88 Old Saugatuck Road in East Norwalk in 2002, made it a perfect home just for her needs.

That home remains today. “The best feature of this house, to me, is health of the home,” Dujardin said. “There are no chemicals and no pesticides, and all of the finishing materials are nontoxic. The healthy indoor quality is evident, and this house has it in spades.” The home — which is anti-allergy —has also won awards for green design, she said.

One year after Dujardin moved in, she gutted and renovated the 55-year-old home.

“We blew out the entire front of the building and put a master suite on the second floor with a balcony and seasonal views of the Long Island Sound,” she said.

The gray home, which sits on 1.15 acres and is 4,094 square feet, has a basement, main level and second level.

The basement includes 656 finished square feet. There is a playroom for children, Dujardin said, as well as a catering kitchen. That kitchen, she said, has double ovens, double sinks, a refrigerator, freezer and a lot of prep space. There is also an exercise room, laundry and utility room in the basement.

Nearby, Dujardin said, is the two-car garage with overheard automatic doors. There is also a hook-up for any electric car.

To the left of the two-story foyer on the main level, she said, is the den/family room with beadboard ceiling and a lot of custombuilt ins.

To the immediate right of the foyer is the living room with a contemporary fireplace, and custom built-ins in both sides of the room for books and storage. There are also two French doors that open to the terraces in the front. “It’s great for entertaining,” Dujardin said.

The nearby kitchen, she said, has solid granite countertops and backsplash. Stainless-steel appliances include a Viking cooktop and Viking double oven. There is also a Sub-Zero refrigerator and three dishwashers, including a Miele.

Adjacent to the kitchen, Dujardin said, is a breakfast room with dining table and custom built-ins. The breakfast room, she said, also has glass French doors that lead out to a stone patio with grill. Beyond that is the 11-by-15 shed and down the hall from the breakfast room is a full bath.

There are two master suites: One on the first floor and the larger one that was renovated in 2003 and 2004 on the second level.

The second level master bedroom has 14-foot ceilings and double French doors going out to the balcony.

“The master is very refined with lighting and the full sound system,” she said. “In the basement, there is a 400-disc CD player in which you can punch in numbers from the room and listen to anything.”

The second-floor master, she said, also features a refrigerator in the dressing room with a huge walk-in closet nearby.
