The Norwalk Hour

‘ The Violence Inside Us,’ Chris Murphy’s new book VOICES

- Karen Spencer Norwalk

I received the book in return for making a small donation. I expected it to be fairly “dry” and maybe “scholarly” and not very interesting reading.

I was very mistaken! It should be required reading for everyone in Congress. I found myself anxious to return to it, as though it were an exciting mystery.

It’s not just well written, interesting and clear and articulate, but a great history, sociology and cultural lesson. Written in the first person in clear, simple, everyday language, it would appeal to readers both with and even without higher education. Never talks down, never assumes the reader is familiar with the workings of government, gun control lobby or local government. All is clearly explained.

Chris’ description of his own understanding (and even lack thereof), and growth and development of what is happening in communities of “in-groups” and “out-groups” makes the reader stop and reassess our own understanding and commitment to change and improvement. Realizing that it goes deeper than “mere” gun control, but to helping to move segments of population from poverty and the scourge of racism. Access to education and jobs being so crucial.

I applaud Chris for the research and clear commitment in writing one of the more interesting and important books in a long time.

Also, I’m wondering why I didn’t see it in the Westport Barnes and Noble just the other day.

Congratulations on a monumental undertaking that should have widespread dissemination.
