Nearly 10 inches of snow hits Norwalk

NORWALK — A blustery overnight storm that dropped nearly 10 inches of snow in Norwalk quietly subsided late Thursday morning, leaving only a few residents without power.

Between 8 and 10 inches of snow accumulated in Norwalk, city communications manager Josh Morgan said, with no car accidents or tree damage reported.

There were no no power outages in the city as of late Thursday afternoon, according to Eversource.

City trucks shifted operations to clearing parking lots, sidewalks and secondary roads by late morning, Morgan said.

At Carlyn Paint and Hardware on Westport Avenue, shoppers continued looking for shovels and pavement salt to prevent the buildup of black ice, undeterred by the snow, employee Kevin McCormack said Thursday morning.

“But we’re always busy,” he added.

Sleds are also in high demand. While no sleds are currently in stock, the store is expecting a shipment of them on Saturday, McCormack said.

Due to the weather, the city canceled COVID-19 testing in Veterans Park on Thursday, but regular hours will resume Friday. All Thursday routes for city garbage and recycling removal will be moved to Friday.

All city buildings and offices, including the library, were closed on Thursday and are expected to reopen Friday, Mayor Harry Rilling said. The Norwalk snow emergency remains in effect until further notice.

To accommodate the parking ban, Rilling waived the parking fees for the Yankee Doodle Garage on Burnell Boulevard and the Maritime Garage on North Water Street until 7 a.m. Friday.

Additionally, the community room at the Norwalk Police Department has been converted to a warming center and will be open for residents, including those who may lose power due to the storm, Rilling said. Community room visitors must wear a face covering and remain socially distant while utilizing the warming center.
