BRIDGEPORT — Bishop Frank J. Caggiano has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, the Diocese of Bridgeport said.

A statement posted to the Diocese website Wednesday said Caggiano is asymptomatic and is feeling well.

“However, he will observe a 10-day quarantine consistent with CDC guidelines,” the statement reads. “As a result, he will not engage in public ministry or attend any previously scheduled events during this time.”

Caggiano tested positive on Monday, according to the statement.

The bishop has been tested on a weekly basis because of his travel schedule to different parishes under the Diocese, according to the statement.

He learned of the positive test on Wednesday “and he immediately went into quarantine.”

The test was conducted at a COVID-19 testing site set up at Queen of Saints Hall in the Catholic Center, at 238 Jewett Ave. in Bridgeport.

The statement noted that site is open to the public, as well as additional testing sites at Our Lady of Fatimah Parish in Wilton and the Immaculate High School Retreat Center in Danbury.

The statement also said the Diocese “has consistently followed and often exceeded all state and local recommendations,” and highlighted a registration feature at Mass so “congregations can be notified if any who attended a service later becomes aware of a positive test.”

“The Diocese asks for prayers for Bishop Caggiano and for all those throughout the Diocese who are afflicted by the virus, those who have lost loved ones, and for the many people suffering from anxiety related to the pandemic,” the statement said.
