Norwalk PD: Beware scammers posing as law enforcement
Police are warning residents of a new scam where callers impersonate law enforcement officials to try and exhort money from unsuspecting individuals.
The scammers call residents and claim to be local law enforcement officials, using titles such as “officer,” “sheriff,” “marshal,” “captain” or “lieutenant,” police said. Police said the callers claim the resident has a warrant out for their arrest and then demands “large amounts of money” to have the charges dismissed.
The scammer will usually ask for payment by money transfer, gift card, or some type of electronic money transfer, according to police.
“Remember, the court and law enforcement will never demand money over the phone,” police said.
The department reminded residents that you should never share any personal information, such as birthdates, social security numbers, or bank account details.
If you receive a call like this, law enforcement recommends that you gather all the information you can, hang up and report all the details to the Federal Trade Commission at https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/.
Anyone who has been affected by a scam like this is asked to call the Norwalk Police Department at 203-854-3000 and file a report.
