Chickens make it hard to cross road
To the editor, Chick-fil-A has been a traffic problem since its opening, which we understood would drive significant traffic. This has slowed down, but not stopped. It cannot be attributed to the pandemic. Rampart Road is a major secondary feeder and connection to and from Route 1 to Flax Hill Road, which connects East and West as another major secondary artery in Norwalk.
Chick-fil-A is a significant inconvenience for the residents in the immediate neighborhood of Joe Mar Road, Cossitt Road, Chatham Drive, Shaw Avenue, Beaufort Street, etc., as well as the entire Brookside neighborhood and a large number of residents in Brookside and Rowayton.
The city should NOT use taxpayer money to fund an engineer. First, that should be Chick-fil-A’s obligation, since their establishment is causing the issue. Second, get the state involved, as the Chick-fil-A address is clearly Connecticut Avenue (Route 1) on their website. Third, have a public hearing as well as soliciting written input from all of the neighborhoods and taxpayers who are impacted.
No easy fix from a non-engineer, but if the southbound lane of Rampart Road is widened as much as possible into Chick-fil-A property (fire hydrant there), the median on Rampart between the Chick-fil-A exit and Stop & Shop

removed, there should be enough space to make a second lane for turning into Chick-fil-A, freeing up the southbound lane for residents who are either traveling into South Norwalk, or Stop & Shop patrons. At the same time, the sidewalk on Route 1 can be re-routed to circumnavigate the power pole perhaps creating a separate turn lane from Connecticut Avenue/Route 1.
Sunday is a major relief to driving in the area, as Chick-fil-A is closed and residents are free to take an established route.
