Norwalk city councilman ordered to undergo family violence program

- By Pat Tomlinson

STAMFORD — A judge ordered a Norwalk city councilman accused of assault to undergo a family violence education program on Wednesday.

Judge Kevin Randolph said Kadeem Roberts, 29, will need to enroll in the family services program — on top of the courtordered anger management courses he’s already completed — before his attorney Darnell Crosland can seek a nolle, meaning the case would be dismissed.

Roberts, a member of Norwalk’s Common Council, was arrested Dec. 20 and charged with third-degree assault, interfering with a 911 call and disorderly conduct after police were called to a disturbance around 2 a.m.

Lt. Jared Zwickler said Roberts was giving the woman a ride home “after a night of drinking” when an argument occurred.

When they arrived at their destination, Roberts threw the victim’s belongings out of the car, Zwickler said. Roberts then “mushed” the victim’s face with an open hand, poked the woman in the eye and pulled her hair, Zwickler said.

Zwickler said the victim had injuries that were consistent with her claims, and Roberts was later arrested at his home.

The female victim in the case also accused Roberts of stalking her, according to his arrest report.

“She claimed to have had prior incidents with Roberts, but has not reported them to the police due to his status,” responding officer Ramon Tejada wrote in the report. Roberts denies the allegations. Roberts, a Norwalk High School grad, has represented District A on the Common Council since elected in 2019. His victory at 28 years old made him the youngest Black man to ever be elected to the council.

His next court date is scheduled for April 23.
