Quinnipiac falls in OT in ECAC title game
St. Lawrence scored just over three minutes into the game, tied it with just over three minutes left and beat Quinnipiac just over three minutes into overtime Saturday in the ECAC men's hockey final.
David Jankowski's goal at 3:44 of overtime sent the Saints into the NCAA Tournament with a 3-2 win at Frank Perrotti Jr. Arena.
The Saints (6-7-3) won their first conference championship since 2001 and secured their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2007.
Quinnipiac (17-7-4), ranked 10th in both polls, will have to wait out the tournament's selection committee. The bracket will be announced Sunday night at 7 on ESPNU.
The Saints had a strong first period and, after Quinnipiac controlled play for most of the second and third, tied it with 3:38 to go.
Justin Paul was first to a dump-in behind the net to Quinnipiac goalie Keith Petruzzelli's right. The puck came to Luc Salem on
the left wing as Paul went to the net. Petruzzelli stopped Salem's high shot, but Paul got the rebound to his forehand to tuck it home.
The Bobcats scored two goals in 12 seconds in the second, two minutes after Petruzzelli made two saves on St. Lawrence shorthanded chances.
Odeen Tufto scored from a left-side bad angle at 7:55 of the second period, getting a shot under Emil Zetterquist, off the right post and in. Then Ty Smilanic forced a turnover at the blue line, and Skyler
Brind'Amour set up Wyatt Bongiovanni on the left side.
Bongiovanni hadn't played since since suffering a lower-body injury the day after Christmas. This was just the junior forward's eighth game this season.
The Saints got the jump 3:07 into the game on a rebound. Kaden Pickering dove to his right away from two Quinnipiac defenders to pounce after Petruzzelli stopped Phillip Alftberg's initial shot.
