Brien McMahon High School principal placed on administrative leave

NORWALK — Brien McMahon High School Principal Scott Hurwitz has been placed on administrative leave this week while the school district addresses an undisclosed personnel matter.

Norwalk Public Schools Chief Communications Officer Brenda Wilcox Williams said Friday that Hurwitz has not been terminated or disciplined by the school district, but has been placed on leave without prejudice, meaning an investigation is ongoing.

“We consider personnel matters to be confidential, and we have no further comment on this matter at this time. However, we are working to resolve this matter promptly,” Wilcox Williams said.

“The safety of our students and the continuity of their instruction are our primary concern, and we remain committed to communicating with students and parents as the situation develops,” she added.

Hurwitz, a former teacher and housemaster, has

served as the Brien McMahon principal since 2017.

Federation of Teachers President Mary Yordon said Friday she was not aware of the reason behind Hurwitz’s leave of absence. Yordon, who said Hurwitz has served the school with “great honor and integrity,” noted that

administrative leaves can last anywhere from a few hours to several weeks or months depending on the circumstances.

“Administrative leave means nobody has made any judgements against you. It’s a completely neutral status,” Yordon said. “It does not mean he has

been found guilty of anything whatsoever. It just means they are taking him out of his office temporarily to conduct some kind of inquiry or investigation.”

Assistant Principal Barbara Wood has been leading the school during Hurwitz’s absence, according to Wilcox Williams.
