Norwalk holds waste pickup for items damaged by Ida floods
NORWALK — A collection of bulk waste and damaged items caused by Ida is scheduled for next week.
The city will provide a special flood damage collection on Sept. 15 and Sept. 16 to retrieve bulky items destroyed by the storm, according to a city statement.
Eligible items for pickup include furniture, mattresses, carpets and large plastic items like kids toys and outdoor chairs, among other items.
Ineligible items include: yard waste, including storm debris; tires; propane tanks; construction debris such as concrete, sheet rock, toilets, shingles; electronics, including TVs; and Freon appliances such as air conditioners and refrigerators.
All items for pickup must be by the curb by 6 a.m. Wednesday morning. The garbage collection is available to all Norwalk residents, except those in the Sixth Taxing District, according to the statement.
Residents of the Sixth Taxing District are not eligible for the city special bulky collection since they receive year-round collection through their waste management vendor AFK Carting, according to the statement.
For residents situated on private roads, flood damaged bulky items must be brought to the nearest city street intersection, according to the statement. Customer Service can provide specific details to residents.
Residents must sign up for collection by 4 p.m. Monday via phone at 203854-3200 or email customerservice@norwalkct.org, according to the statement.
Storm debris and ineligible bulky items can be disposed Yard Waste Site, at 15 S. Smith St. A disposal pass is required, according to the statement.
The site is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The site is closed on Sunday.
Additionally, the city is looking to collect information and photos of damage to Norwalk homes and residences caused by Ida, city spokesperson Josh Morgan said.
Property owners are asked to submit pictures and details on the storm
damage to the city, though there is no guarantee of any monetary assistance.
“We are being proactive in collecting this information in the event of any potential assistance to help us better advocate for our
community,” a city statement read.
Residents can submit storm damage reports online.
