FAIRFIELD — There are two reported cases of the COVID-19 omicron variant in Fairfield, the town’s health department said late Friday.

The Fairfield Health Department’s contact tracing team has interviewed both cases and notified their close contacts of the exposure.

The health department said the two people have been advised to isolate. They both reported mild symptoms and don’t need to be hospitalized, the health department said.

First Selectwoman Brenda Kupchick stressed the importance of residents taking precautions against the virus this holiday season.

“It is very important that everyone in our community take steps to reduce the risk of getting and spreading COVID-19,” Kupchick said.

These two cases were part of the nine Omicron variant cases reported by the state Friday. The state has seen 11 total Omicron cases.

Friday’s new cases included five residents in New Haven County, three in

Fairfield County and one in Hartford County. The state didn’t identify the towns the cases were in.

Seven of the individuals were fully vaccinated, the state Department of Public Health said.

Fairfield’s Director of Health, Sands Cleary, said “Vaccination is the single most important measure to protect against COVID and variants.”

Of the 585 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 statewide, 77 percent are not fully vaccinated, the state said Friday.

In fact, those who are unvaccinated are at 16 times more risk of dying from COVID-19 compared to those who are fully vaccinated, the state said.

About 78 percent of Fairfield

residents have received at least one dose of the vaccine, Cleary said.

“It is important to get your booster shot if eligible,” Cleary said.
