The Norwalk Hour

Help spread cheer to Norwalkers through giving

- By Abigail Brone abigail.brone@ hearstmediact.com

It’s week three of the Giving Fund, and we have more stories from the Family & Children’s Agency of community members who need a little help this holiday season.

In years past, FCA has been able to help every single client included in the Giving Fund, but so far this year there has not been as large of a swell of support. Please consider contributing any amount to make the holiday season brighter for members of our community.

For the fifth year in a row, the Hour has partnered with Family & Children’s Agency for the Giving Fund. Each week on Thursdays and Sundays, The Hour will publish 10 stories of clients from FCA who need some help. The needs vary from school supplies and child care to home furnishings and groceries. Each story has a case number, and donations can be made at Family & Children’s Agency, Inc. - Acceptiva.

The families and individuals mentioned in the stories often don’t know they have been submitted, and names have been changed to protect their privacy. Donations made in excess of a client’s need will go to the Client Support Fund to help others in need.

Each case in the Giving Fund includes an estimated dollar amount that would help a local person or family tackle everyday challenges such as rent payments, child care costs and transportation. Every dollar donated to the Giving Fund goes directly to the people in the stories, which will be published twice a week throughout the holiday season.

Help make the holiday season brighter for members of our community:

220: When Bruno was very young, he witnessed a horrible violent crime. Ever since then he has suffered from PTSD and has had trouble sleeping, which impacts his schoolwork. Bruno is in therapy to address these issues, but the remedies for his sleep issues and the therapy sessions can be expensive. A gift of $200 would help them pay for these needs to help Bruno overcome this difficult memory.

221: Luna is a teen mom who is parenting by herself. Her brother has cancer, and they both live with their grandmother. Luna has been working with FCA to overcome her history of abuse to become a good mom and continue her education. Luna’s grandmother contracted COVID-19 and has struggled recovering. Due to the loss of income, she is behind on her rent. A gift of $500 would help her catch up on her rent payments to ensure this family continues to have a safe and stable home.

222: Jeff is only 19 years old and is a single dad. He recently got sole custody of his infant daughter who will move in with him soon. He is learning both how to be a dad and how to be an adult all at once. He works hard, but preparing for a baby is expensive. A gift of $500 would help him get a crib and some baby items for his little girl.

223: Marcia is a single mom of three young children. She noticed her 3month-old baby was getting rashes, had colic, and wasn’t gaining weight. In time, it was discovered the baby had food allergies. Marcia found a formula her baby can tolerate, and she is now doing much better and gaining weight, but the formula is expensive and isn’t covered by her food assistance. A gift of $150 would help her provide the nutritious formula her baby needs.

224: Rebecca is a single mother of two young children in Norwalk. With help from Family and Children’s Agency, she recently moved out of the homeless shelter and into an apartment. She works multiple jobs to support her family, but their new apartment is scarcely furnished. A gift of $400 would help her buy some basic furniture so the family can feel that their new house is a home.
