Locals flock to beach for test-kit distribution
NORWALK — After the Veteran’s Park COVID-19 testing site reached capacity 15 minutes before the site even opened, Norwalk officials prepared for a rush of residents seeking at-home tests to be distributed Tuesday evening.
At Calf Pasture Beach, Norwalk officials were prepared to be inundated with Norwalkers seeking testing kits and masks to be distributed beginning at 6 p.m. However, the city asked only residents exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 or with a known exposure to the virus to seek the tests.
The test and mask distribution, which was originally scheduled for Dec. 31, was moved to Tuesday after the state was unable to secure the supplies in time.
“We also remind residents there continues to be a lack of testing supplies, not just in Norwalk but around the state,” city spokesperson Josh Morgan said. “Tests, whether PCR or rapid, should really only be used for those who are symptomatic or have a known exposure to COVID-19, and not as a general screening tool.”
Ultimately, the city received about half the number of tests expected.
Norwalk was set to receive 11,000 boxes, with two tests in each box. Now, the city will receive 13,500 boxes, with one test in each.
Of the 13,500 tests, Norwalk distributed about 8,500 to the public on Tuesday. The remaining tests are being distributed to local first responders, those in congregate living facilities and who are greater risk of exposure and are the most vulnerable, according to the statement.
The city planned on increased traffic in the area as a result of the distribution event and had police officers on duty to held regulate the flow of traffic.
