H. Edward Spires

Hubert Edward Spires, 96, formerly of 6 Toilsome Ave., Norwalk, CT, died peacefully at his Upper Arlington, OH home on Monday, January 10, 2022. Born in Lancaster, OH on November 8, 1925; he was the son of the late Hubert and Irene (Schmelzer) Spires.

Ed was preceded in death by his cherished husband, David Arlen Rosenberg, with whom he enjoyed 64 magnificent years, including 15 years of marriage. He is survived by an abundance of loving friends, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Ed loved to cook, and the couple generously entertained friends and family in their Connecticut home. They traveled together throughout Europe and the Middle East, including their favorite destination, Egypt. Ed and David had a deep love for all animals and are survived by Sadie, the latest of many beloved poodles.

A veteran of the United States Air Force, Ed served his country as a chaplain’s assistant in the 1940s.

Ed began his career in window display design at F&R Lazarus & Company, in Columbus, OH, and Bloomingdale’s in New York City. He later owned a successful New York City decorative arts business, Fabulous Fakes. Ed enjoyed a second career in Theater, designing and creating props and scenery for many community theaters across Connecticut and Ohio, as well as teaching set design at Fairfield University in Fairfield, CT. He received critical acclaim for his work as a director and set designer at Westport Community Theatre for plays, including Quartermaine’s Terms, Agnes of God, The Gin Game, and Mornings at Seven. In addition, his set designs for Charley’s Aunt, The Dresser, The Importance of Being Ernest, School for Scandal, and The Heiress won numerous awards; he designed opera sets for La Boheme and Aida, among others. Ed was honored by St. Philip Roman Catholic Church, receiving its highest accolade for his extensive artistic work during the church’s five-year renovation.

A mass of celebration is being planned for a date to be determined at St. Philip Church, Norwalk, CT. The couple will later be buried at Martha’s Vineyard.
