Syma Gruss
Syma Gruss, of Wilton, died on June 11, at Norwalk Hospital, after a short illness. She was born in Boston, and a graduate of the Boston public schools and Clark University. A fervent patron of the arts, Syma was a former member of the Norwalk Symphony Women's Association and an ardent supporter of the Norwalk Symphony Orchestra for half a century. She enjoyed sharing her love of music, dance, and literature. A keen bridge player, Syma appreciated spending time with other dedicated players.
She served as a Girl Scout leader, a member of the National Council of Jewish Women's Ship-A-Box Program, and as a docent at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum. Syma was an early board member for the Norwalk Community College and a charter member of Rolling Hills Country Club where she served for many years on the Women's Golf Committee.
Syma was the widow of the late attorney Marvin Gruss, a founder of Norwalk Community College and New Canaan Community Foundation, and daughter of the late Dora and Myer Birnbaum.
Syma was predeceased by Henry Diamond, her good friend and partner for more than 15 years. She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Dr. Claudia Gruss and Dr. Eric Einstein of Redding, and Emily and Dr. Brian Perlman of Olney, MD, three grandchildren and their spouses, and 5 great-grandchildren.
Interment at the Hebrew Independent Cemetery will be private. Collins Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Norwalk Symphony Society or the arts charity of one's choice.
