Six from state capture New England crowns
Six Connecticut wrestlers captured championships at the New England girls tournament held in Fitchburg, Mass., on March 19.
Amity’s Camryn Brown, Brien McMahon’s Calli Gilchrist and Guilford’s Brianna Seixas, all state champions this season, added New England crowns. Milford’s Kayla Batres, Stratford’s Shyan Rolle, and Bethel’s Esther Ribeiro also won regional titles.
Sixteen wrestlers reached the podium at the tournament, with Stamford’s Samantha Yap, Old Lyme’s Hoshena Gemme, and Foran’s Kelly Aspras as runnersup in their weight classes.
Brown, a three-time state champion, went 4-0 with two pins at 145 pounds. The senior defeated Aspras 10-0 in the final.
Gilchrist, a sophomore at Brien McMahon, captured the 120-pound title after going 4-0 and pinning Abigail Alisandro of North Oxford (Mass.) at 3:14 of the final.
Seixas, a senior, won two matches via pinfall and defeated Limenwa Kennedy of Bedford (NH) at 1:19 to take the 152pound title.
Ribeiro won the 138pound class with three pinfalls, all in 55 seconds or less. She defeated Katelynn Zannoni of Pelham
(NH) in 31 seconds in the final.
Rolle, a sophomore, was 3-0 while winning at 132 pounds. She edged Jillian Glaski of North Bennington (VT) 9-7 in the title bout.
Batras won the 107pound title with a 3-0 record, and beat Yap 7-0 in the final.
Gemme, another sophomore, lost a tight match with Sarah McLaughlin of Scituate (MA) 2-1 in the 114-pound final.
Finishing third were Norwalk’s Rylee Donahue (132) and Weston’s Sophia Lancin (138).
In fourth place were Ellis Tech’s Addisyn Herdic (100), Masuk’s Gianna Silva (114), and Stamford’s Jasmine Whitfield (126). In fifth place were Joel Barlow’s Sophie Brault (100) and Stratford’s Lindsey Rwolt (120).
