390 new confirmed virus cases

Pace slows after several days of more than 600 infections

The number of new COVID-19 cases in Michigan slowed slightly from a big week Sunday, adding 390 new cases

This is a downturn after Wednesday, Friday and Saturday all showed cases in excess of 600, with Thursday adding more than 450.

Michigan saw only one reported coronaviru­s-related death Sunday, bringing the statewide total to 6,068.

Including 7,438 probable cases and 246 deaths possibly attributed to coronaviru­s, that brings Michigan’s totals to 76,776 cases and 6,314 deaths.

In Michigan, more than 1.5 million requests for absentee ballots have been filled out heading into the Aug. 4 primary, according to the Associated Press.

This is more than three times the number of the 2016 primary.

As a result of coronaviru­s, several voting precincts have been moved away from senior facilities and into school buildings.

Worldwide cases are now at 12,794,395, with 566,491 deaths attributed to the coronaviru­s.

The United States now has 3,282,554 cases and 135,029 deaths.

Cases by county

Kent County saw the largest single-day increase in Michigan Sunday, with 174 new cases and three new deaths, bringing the county’s totals to 5,363 cases and 141 deaths.

Nearby Ottawa County reported 38 new cases for a total of 1,194, while COVID-19 deaths remained at 47 from the previous day. Kalamazoo County saw 17 new cases and no new deaths, now totaling 1,152 cases and 69 deaths.

Wayne County outside of Detroit was the secondhard­est hit, with 66 new cases, bringing the county to exactly 11,000. Only one new coronaviru­s-related death was reported in Wayne, now at 1,181.

Detroit saw 34 new cases, bringing its total to 11,932. The city continues to have the highest number of cases in the state. COVID-19 deaths in the city remained at 1,458 from the previous day.

Oakland County reported 56 new cases for a total of 9,535. No new coronaviru­s-related deaths were reported in the county. Probable cases increased to 3,165, while probable deaths remained at 42.

Macomb County surpassed 7,500 cases Sunday, adding 46 from the previous day for a total of 7,536. Four more deaths were recorded for a total of 891.

Washtenaw County saw 31 new cases, now at 1679. Its one additional COVID-19 death brings the county to 108.

In the Lansing area, Ingham County reported no new COVID-19 cases or deaths. Its totals remain at 1,122 cases and 30 deaths.

Mid-Michigan saw no new cases or deaths, probable or confirmed, in Isabella County, Gratiot County, and Clare County. Isabella remains at 134 cases and 8 deaths, Gratiot remains at 95 cases and 14 deaths, and Clare County remains at 31 cases and 3 deaths.

Testing and demographi­cs

As of Sunday, Michigan has performed just under 1.5 million tests - 1,315,305 diagnostic and 183,784 serology tests.

This equates to 149,974 tests per million residents in Michigan.

According to the State of Michigan, those aged 50-59 have the highest number of cases at 11,692. Those aged 0-19 have the lowest. However, those aged 80+ have the highest death county from COVID-19 at 2,586, with those aged 70-79 having the second-highest, and those aged 60-69 at third.

In terms of cases per million, those aged 80+ have the highest infection rate, followed by those aged 70-79. Deaths follow a similar trend.

Women in Michigan have more cases than men, with 36,296 cases opposed to 32,847.

However, men have a higher death toll from the virus, with 3,149 male deaths and 2,919 female deaths.

Cases per million echo this data, with women having 7,153 cases per million while men have 6,674. In terms of deaths per million, men are at 640 while women are at 575.

White Michigande­rs have the highest total number of cases at 28,216 and deaths at 3,144, with Black residents having the second-highest count at 20,567 and 2,398 deaths.

In terms of cases and deaths per million, Black Michigande­rs are at 13,271 cases and 1,600 deaths. The next-highest group, Asians and Pacific Islanders, have 4,129 cases per million. White residents have the second-highest number of deaths per million, at 391.
