Michigan added 426 confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, the lowest number in three weeks.

No new deaths were reported on Sunday as well, something only seen twice in July.

With the update, Michigan now has 82,782 confirmed cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, and stays at 6,206 deaths.

With probable cases, Michigan has 91,332 cases and 6,457 deaths.

By mid-afternoon Sunday, the U.S. had 4.65 million cases reported with nearly 155,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

In Michigan, July was a month of renewed concern about the spread of coronavirus, as 17,751 cases were reported in the month, compared to 6,473 in June.

Michigan’s leaders are watching as many other parts of the United State grapple with heightened surges in infections of COVID-19. At one point Michigan ranked fourth in states with infections, an early outbreak center in the country, though never at the level seen in New York or New

Jersey.

Now, New York has been topped by California, Florida, and Texas in the number of cases. And according to Johns Hopkins University, Michigan has fallen to 17th in the ranking of states, having been passed by Virginia, South Carolina, Ohio. and Tennessee in recent days Alabama is just about even with Michigan.

Worldwide, the number of infections was nearing 17.9 million cases with nearly 680,000 deaths.

Local numbers

The last time Michigan posted a lower number of new cases was on Monday, July 13, when 384 cases were announced. On day prior, Sunday, July 12, saw just 390 cases were announced. Four other days were lower in July — 297 on July 6, 343 on July 5, 398 on July 4, and 262 on July 1.

For the last 18 days of July, the state averaged 661 new cases.

For all of July, it averaged 573 cases.

In recent days, the testing has continued to be near or even above the goal of 30,000 daily tests, with:

• 25,623 on Saturday

• 33,657 on Friday

• 31,521 on Thursday

• 29,279 on Wednesday

• 27,701 on Tuesday.

The positivity rate has been at about 3 percent for much of July and also the start of August.

On Sunday, Kent County in west Michigan saw the most new cases with 95 new infections reported, moving their total to 6,567.

Oakland County had the most new cases in the Detroit area, second in the state, on Sunday, reaching 11,521 cases with 51 newly reported only. Macomb County added 39 cases to reach 9,264.

Wayne County — excluding Detroit — added 41 to reach 12,956, the highest number of cases for a single zone. Detroit and Wayne County are listed separately, as is the Michigan Department of Corrections.

All other counties are listed by county.

Detroit added 17 to reach 12,733. Long the hardest hit community in the state, the rest of Wayne County passed Detroit in the number of cases last week.

Mid-Michigan saw little change in their numbers of cases, with Isabella County adding just two to reach 176, and Clare moving up by two to reach 57.
