State reports 898 new cases, 16 fatalities

Overall, state total reaches 123, 633 cases, 6,751 deaths

Michigan saw 898 new confirmed cases of COVID-on Tuesday with 16 new deaths tied the disease caused by the coronaviru­s.

Overall, the state reported 20 deaths, four of them from reviews of vital records. The 20 new deaths announced was the highest one-day total since Aug. 29. Deaths tied to confirmed coronaviru­s cases stood at 6,751 on Tuesday.

With the new cases, Michigan has had 123,633 confirmed cases of the disease.

The update on Tuesday came as the worldwide death toll had just overnight surpassed 1 million killed after COVID-19 infections. Globally, nearly 33.5million cases have been confirmed, according to data collected

by Johns Hopkins University.

In the U. S., nearly 7.2 million cases have been counted with deaths approachin­g 206,000. Nine states have had more than 200,000 cases, with California leading withmore than 800,000 and both Texas and Florida withmore than 700,000 cases. Michigan remained in its 17th position in terms of the number of total cases.

COVID-19’s impact on the sports world also was highlighte­d Tuesday, the day after the Tampa Bay Lightning won the Stanley Cup in a nearly empty arena, the first of themajor leagues to award its championsh­ip.

Also on Tuesday, Major League Baseball kicked off the playoffs with its first 16-team format, following its truncated 60-game season and opening with three-game wild card series played on neutral grounds. For baseball fans, Wednesday will be a delight, with eight playoff games.

Also on Tuesday, the NFL — after a rather traditiona­l three weeks of profession­al football, except for the empty or nearly empty stadiums— saw its first outbreak, with eight members of the Tennessee Titans team staff and players sickened by COVID-19.

Local trends

With the update, September had seen 21,165 cases of COVID-19 confirmed, topping the 20,869 confirmed in all of August. The sevenday average of new cases stood at 818, the highest in weeks and first time over 800 since Aug. 28. Last week saw three days with more than 900 new cases.

Counting more than 13,000 probable cases, many unconfirme­d early on due to a lack of testing, the state has had a total of 136,820 cases and 7,072 deaths.

In total, Michigan has seen more than 3.65 million cases given. In the past three days, about 25,000 tests were recorded each day, and the prior three days saw about 40,000 tests given per day.

Wayne County, not counting Detroit, remained the county with the most new and most total confirmed cases, adding 85 cases to reach 18,424.

Macomb County followed with 72 new confirmed cases to reach 14,155 confirmed cases.

Oakland County added 64 confirmed cases to reach 16,662, though it continued to have the most probable cases, 4,109.

Detroit, so long the top of the list of daily new cases and total cases, continued its trend of lower numbers of new cases. On Tuesday, it added 23 cases to reach 14,416. If trends continue, Macomb County could pass Detroit in the number of confirmed cases early next week.

In western Michigan, Kent County added 72 cases to reach 9,253, while neighborin­g Ottawa County added 23 to reach 3,327 and Kalamazoo County added 30 to reach 2,425.

The counties with the state’s two largest universiti­es saw significan­t increases, with Ingham County — home to MSU — added 51 cases to reach 3,517 cases and Washtenaw County — home to U-M — increased by 61 cases to reach 3,330.

In mid-Michigan, Gratiot County added 15 cases to hit 253 confirmed cases, while Isabella County — home to CMU — added just two cases, landing at 633 cases. Just to the north, Clare County added a single case to reach 104.
