When many people think of beauty pageants, they think of bathing suit competitions and judging women based on their looks. But the American Royal Beauties pageant is different – focusing instead on the importance of community service and inner beauty.

This year, Bloomfield Hills student Savanna Czachorowski, 12, won the national title in the American Royal Beauties’ preteen category. Czachorowski has won local titles in other competitions, but this was her first national win. The pageant and crowingwas held inAugust in Cleveland, Ohio.

Judges said of Czachorowski, “You aremaking a difference in this world. Very articulate, very impressive young lady.”

“When I heard my name called, I was so happy. My smile just exploded onmy face. I walked up to the front of the stage and just could not believe it,” said Czachorowski, a sixth grader at CranbrookKingswood Girls Middle School.

Her platform was called, “Kids in Need, Deserve to Read.” During the COVID-19 pandemic, she raisedmore than $500 to buy books and school supplies for a local kindergarten class in a Title I school. She was inspired to do this because, when she fractured her back two years ago and was stuck at home, her love of reading helped her through that difficult time. She wanted to give that same escape to kids quarantining at home.

Czachorowski has also baked and delivered cookies to fire stations on the anniversary of

Sept. 11, collected can goods for people who are homeless, delivered holiday meals to families in need and donated to Toys for Tots instead of receiving birthday presents.

“I like to get involved in many different ways. I feel it is important for me and everyone to give back to their community,” she said.

The pageant was different this year because of COVID-19, with each girl only allowed two guests in the audience. Back stage, all girls were required to wear masks and stay six feet apart from one another. They went on stage one at a time to make their presentations, and the microphone was wiped down between each candidate.

Her mom, Sherry Jordan, said, “They announced her as the winner, and they placed a crown and banner on her and give her a bouquet of flowers. She kept smiling and waving; her joy is infectious. … I’m so proud of her, and my husband and I cheered loudly for her.”
