TheBirminghamDetroitCountry Day veteran line was able to win the line of scrimmage against Pontiac Notre Dame Prep Friday night. Conversely, the Irishmade costly penalties that allowed the Yellowjackets to grab a 10-0 victory.
“It’s the strength of our team,” Country Day coach DanMacLean said of his linemen. “Those guys have played a lot of football for us. Some of themare some pretty big people. It’s an advantage for us at every level.”
Led by senior lineman Caleb Tiernan, a Northwestern commit, the Jackets (2-0) were able to penetrate the Irish backfield throughout the game while pushing the pile forward on key offensive plays.
“(Country Day) has a very mature, senior-laden defensive and offensive line. We are pretty young there and still learning our way around,” Notre Dame Prep coach Pat Fox said. “We start a sophomore a sophomore and three juniors on our offensive line. They are going to get better as the year goes on, but they got outworked a little (Friday).”
The Yellowjackets were dominant defensively in the first half and took advantage of Notre Dame Prep penalties to establish the 10-0 lead at the break.
CountryDay scored on its opening possession but was aided by two fourth-down penalties from the Irish (2-1). ND roughed the punter after getting a stop, then jumped offsides on 4th and 2 from its 7-yard line. Those errors allowed Jacob Yarberry to score on a 4-yard run to put the Jackets up early, 7-0.
Yarberry was playing in his first game of the season after having to miss DCD’s season opener last week due to COVID-19.
“We got (Yarberry) back for his
