The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has announced it will be opening 77 new, free COVID-19 testing sites statewide.

The additional sites are being added in partnership with Walgreens and the Michigan Primary Care Association, bringing the state’s total of free sites to almost 100.

“Cost should never be a barrier to Michiganders who need health care, including COVID-19 testing,” Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said. “Containing the pandemic requires robust, easily accessible, free testing – and this is a big step in the right direction.”

By federal law private insurance, Medicare and Medicaid must cover medically necessary COVID-19 tests with no out of pocket cost. The free testing sites are meant to fill the gap for those whose insurers don’t consider the test medically necessary, such as those who are asymptomatic, and those who are uninsured or under-insured.

A total of 36 Walgreens locations statewide will host the testing sites, including several in Oakland County. Tests are conducted by appointment only through the pharmacy drive-thru lanes.

The state is also expanding its partnership with the Michigan Primary Care Association, the association of federally qualified health centers in Michigan.

Free tests will now be available at 47 locations.

“Michigan’s community health centers are thrilled to partner with MDHHS to provide greater access to COVID-19 testing at no cost,” Dennis Litos, interim chief executive officer of the Michigan Primary Care Association, said. “Reducing barriers for Michiganders to receive critical health care like COVID-19 testing is at the heart of health centers’ mission.”
