Garden Club offers opportunities for students to enjoy the outdoors

- — Submitted by Jenny Van Dusen

The Rochester Garden Club has initiated a new scholarship programfor elementary school students in the Rochester area this year.

The scholarships are for elementary students to attend the Nature Discovery Camp, hosted by the city of Rochester Hills every summer.

Benefitting from the scholarship this year, Chace Browe, 7, enjoyed an outdoor experience at Bloomer Park – fishing and observing crayfishand turkeys. His parents Kristen and Nick Browe said they are grateful that there are now programs available for the younger students.

As a part of itsmission, the Rochester Garden Club supports environmental education and is especially interested in helping students of all ages experience the natural world. In addition to this new program for elementary-age students, graduating seniors receive scholarships toward college degrees in environmental studies and middle school students are invited to a weeklong 4-H sponsored sleep away camp for environmental education.

The club also serves the community in the areas of conservation, education, horticulture therapy and civic improvement. Funds for these projects come from sales at the annual Gifts and Greens Market.

Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, this year the market will move online. Holiday arrangements and handmade gifts can be purchased between Nov. 15 and 25 with pick up for all items on Dec. 4 and 5 at the Rochester Fire Department, 277 E Second St, Rochester.
