Michigan reported 7,205 new confirmed cases of coronavirus Monday and 90 new deaths as doses of a vaccine for the virus began to be distributed to frontline health workers around the state and country.

The state reports two-day totals on Monday that include Sunday when numbers aren’t tallied.

To date, the state has had 437,985 confirmed cases of the virus and 10,752 deaths since counting began last March when the virus swept the country and caused economic havoc.

As the first doses of the vac

cine are delivered, Congress is trying to reach an agreement on additional assistance for people and businesses impacted by the economic fallout from the pandemic before the Christmas holiday.

The two-day totals reported Monday indicate the pace of new cases and deaths may be moderating somewhat, though continuing to increase.

The two-day totals include 642 cases and two deaths in Oakland County, 632 cases and 11 deaths in Wayne County, 583 cases and eight deaths in Macomb County, and 312 cases and three deaths in Detroit.

Southeast Michigan, the most populous area in the state, has continued to be a driver of coronavirus numbers since the pandemic began.

But other counties have also shown significant coronavirus numbers, particularly in the western part of the state and in counties along the I-75 corridor.

Washtenaw County reported 219 cases and two deaths Monday, Saginaw County had 124 cases and three deaths, and Genesee County had 372 cases and four deaths.

In west Michigan, Ottawa County had 222 cases and three deaths, Muskegon County reported 100 cases and five deaths, and Kent County had 541 cases and three deaths.

In rural mid Michigan, Gratiot County had 59 cases and one death, Isabella County had 55 cases but no deaths, and Clare County had 27 new cases and no deaths.
