The state plans to allow reopening of food establishments Feb. 1 based on metrics the state health department has been tracking.

Wednesday’s numbers indicate deaths from the deadly virus have fallen sharply, particularly in southeast Michigan.

Confirmed infections have topped 22.8 million. Arizona and California have been among the hardest-hit states. The country is now in the most lethal phase of the outbreak yet, even as vaccines are being rolled out.

After a slow start, Michigan’s
