A lot of gray in decision to resume sports

I’ve been thinking of what to say for about five days now and I am still not sure what it is exactly I want to say.

Last Friday’s extension of the indoor sports ban to Feb. 21 has really caused a lot o f uproar.

The line in the sand has been drawn by many coaches, parents and athletes in the high school athletic world.

Many are seeing it as a black and white issue, but I am still very much in the gray.

Ultimately, I want to see the winter athletes allowed to compete, but I also know it isn’t as simple as saying the word “go.”

Each potential decision has risks, and those risks are severe.

As I type out these words, I still deal with a cough from exercising that has been with me since I had COVID-19 in late March.

I just recently had to write about David Feldman, a great man who was the athletic director at Birmingham Marian that passed away after a five-week hospital battle with the virus.

I don’t envy the position of the parents, coaches and athletes, but I also don’t envy the position of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the MHSAA.

The reality is all three are going to have to find a common ground here to get winter sports going.

Provide the metrics

Since the initial bans began in Michigan last March, the term heard most often has been, “science and data.”

Those were the criteria that led to the decision-making for the last 10 months.
