New Michigan deaths from coronavirus over the last two days fell to 12, and 1,569 new cases of the virus were reported statewide.

The two-day totals reported Monday brings Michigan’s total cases to 589,150 and total deaths to 15,522 since counting began nearly a year ago after the start of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, the number of vaccines given over two days through Friday totaled 2,131,955, a two-day increase of 77,218.

The state’s goal remains to vaccine 70 percent of the 8,096,917 state residents estimated to be age 16 and older.

So far, health providers have vaccinated 16.7% of that target population, including 286,910 shots given in Oakland County, 164,612 in Macomb County, 219,634 in Wayne County, and 68,851 in Detroit.

Health priorities have been to vaccinate front-line and essential workers, and people over 65 and those in assisted living facilities.

Even though deaths are fewer, numbers continue to show the most new cases in the state’s most populated counties, particularly in southeast Michigan.

In two-day totals reported Monday, there were 248 new cases and one death in Wayne County, 157 cases and no deaths in Macomb County, 149 cases and no

deaths in Oakland County, and 68 cases and no deaths in Detroit.

In other areas of the state, there were 94 cases and one death in Genesee County, 126 cases and one death in Kent County, and 61 cases and no deaths in Washtenaw County.

In mid Michigan, there were no deaths and six cases in Clare County, three cases in Gratiot County, and eight cases in Isabella County.

Thirteen of Michigan’s 83 counties reported no new deaths or cases from the virus.
