I-75 traffic shift begins; 13 Mile Road to close
Starting Wednesday, southbound I-75 travels on the northbound side of the freeway between 12 Mile and 14 Mile roads.
Two lanes of southbound I-75 will be open.
The traffic shift will allow crews to replace the southbound I-75 bridge over 13 Mile Road in Madison Heights, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.
Also as part of the bridge replacement, 13 Mile is scheduled to close under I-75 from 10 p.m. Wednesday until Monday, March 8.
By 5 a.m. Monday, one lane of 13 Mile will be open in each direction under I-75.
The bridge replacement is part of the third and final phase of the I-75 Modernization Project, which resumed Feb. 26.
The modernization, which began in 2016, is a $1.6 billion construction project in Oakland County that involves improvements to 18 miles of highway, stretching from Eight Mile Road to just south of M-59.
That portion of the freeway was built in the 1960s and has not received comprehensive improvements since then.
Phase three construction costs total $630 million. This final phase, expected to be completed in 2023, also includes $770 million for a 25-year maintenance agreement with the contractor, Oakland Corridor Partners.
Some other closures are in effect until the end of the 2021 construction season:
• The I-696 ramps to southbound I-75 are closed.
• All entrance and exit ramps along southbound I-75 from south of I-696 to Eight Mile Road are closed.
