Teen becomes one of the first female Eagle Scouts in Michigan

Isabella Hom joins 1K in U.S. to earn prestigious rank

Isabella Hom recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout — becoming the first female Eagle Scout in Troop 1707G and in the city of Troy.

Boy Scouts of America — renamed Scouting BSA — opened its program to female youth in 2019. Hom is one of only 1,000 female Eagle Scouts across the country and one of 35 in the state of Michigan.

Hom had been a Girl Scout since elementary school before joining Scouting BSA. Scouting runs in her blood — her two brothers were Eagles; her father was a “life rank,” the Boy Scout level before Eagle; and her mother was an Eagle coach, advising scouts along their Eagle journey.

“When Scouting opened their Eagle ranks to girls, I knew it was something I wanted very much to pursue,” said Hom, a 2020 graduate of Troy High School currently studying health sciences at the University of Michigan Dearborn.

For her Eagle Scout project, Hom provided hygiene kits, touchless thermometers, pulse oximeters, blood pressure monitors and Naloxone medical supply cabinets to a homeless shelter in Pontiac. To fund these purchases, she organized a bottle/can drive, collecting more than $2,100 worth of recyclables from fellow scouts.

“The Scouting Motto is ‘Be Prepared.’ Throughout my Eagle process I really learned organization, preparedness, time management (and) communication,” said Hom.

Hom, a former member of the Troy Colt Marching Band, was asked to play the bugle at the national inauguration of the first class of female Eagle Scouts. To watch, visit www.scouting.org/bethechange.
