Three people fell through ice-covered lakes in two separate incidents Wednesday but managed to get out before help arrived, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said.

These situations occurred on a day that saw temperatures rise into the upper 60s.

One of the incidents involved a 71-year-old Pontiac man and a 69-yearold Lake Orion man, who reportedly were seen falling through the ice near a dock on North Conklin Road in Orion Township at around 3:45 p.m. The person who called 911 reportedly said the two were having trouble getting out of the water, so the sheriff’s dive team was activated.

When deputies arrived, the two had managed to remove themselves from the water, telling deputies they had been ice fishing and fell through as they headed back to shore. The dive team was cancelled. Both men refused medical treatment, the sheriff’s office said.

The other incident was reported at around 5:30 p.m. in Oakland Township, and the dive team was again activated by subsequently canceled. The sheriff’s office said it received a report that a female was jumping on the lake in the 3000 block of Deer Springs Lane, and that it appeared she was trying to break the ice. She fell through but extricated herself before deputies and firefighters arrived. She had apparently left by then, the sheriff’s office said.

Two kids playing on the lake, wearing waders, were spotted by deputies and called to shore. They were told it wasn’t safe to be on the ice and to stay off, then sent home, the sheriff’s office said.

A post on social media from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office reminds people to stay off the lakes: “It has been too warm and is too late in the season to test the integrity of the ice. We have had three people go through the ice today as a result of warmer temperatures. Stay safe out there and be smart around water.”
