acter, which will create a love triangle,” Bans says. “A lot of fans like how he’s this dangerous guy who always evades any type of conviction. … We’ll (tell) his origin story — how he got into crime and where his stagger formed and how he’s able to escape (justice).”

Bans and Krebs wouldn’t reveal the third character’s identity, but it’s not hitman Fitzpatric­k — played by Andrew McCarthy, who has directed three episodes of the

show — whom Beth hired last season to assassinat­e Rio.

“It’s taking him forever to complete his contract because he’s found himself infatuated with Beth,” Krebs says. “That’s a complicati­on Beth has to figure out as well in order to get the job done.”

McCarthy’s “Weekend at Bernie’s” co-star Jonathan Silverman has a recurring role this season as a Secret Service agent investigat­ing Dean, who with Beth is laundering money through a new hot tub business. Secret Service agent Phoebe Donnegan (Lauren Lupkas) targets Beth, the real mastermind.

“Phoebe is battling her own personal demons with people like Beth, whom she’s encountere­d before in high school,” Krebs says. “Beth represents a trigger for her — the problems she’s faced growing up and going through adolescenc­e. She’s conflicted because she’s not sure if she’s busting Beth for the noble reason of the law or because she’s trying to settle a bitter, resentful past with someone Beth might represent to her and treated her poorly.”

“Good Girls” found a new audience on Netflix during the coronaviru­s pandemic.

“People think they know what our show is until they see it,” Krebs says. “During quarantine, a lot of people binged it on Netflix. They’re like, ‘Wow, this is not what I thought this show was.’ So we’re finding a whole new audience, building on the audience we already have.

“It took a while to find itself,” he adds. “Season 1 is different from Season 2. Season 2 is different from Season 3. It kept growing. We always say it’s a tonal high wire. It’s a comedy and a drama, but if you lean too far left or right to one of those, it just doesn’t work. We tell our directors, ‘Don’t reach for the joke. Let

the joke come from the uncomforta­ble situation these moms have found themselves in. Don’t reach too far for the drama because if it gets serious, it’s not funny.’”

Bans agrees the show has grown naturally.

“It’s a constantly evolving thing; we’re pushing back in certain areas and pushing forward in others and figuring out as we’re going along,” she says. “What makes the show stand out is the tone’s really evolving. We really straddle the line between dark comedy and drama and crime show. It’s a weird stew of different genres.”
