Charges are pending for a 23-year-old Pontiac man who allegedly shot his exgirlfriend’s current boyfriend Wednesday afternoon in the city’s Hawthorne Park on Telegraph Road.

The injured man was reportedly in stable condition Thursday morning at McLaren-Oakland Hospital with a bullet wound to the shoulder.

Deputies who spoke with him at the hospital said he told them that he and his girlfriend had been sitting in his car when a man approached and began shooting into the vehicle, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office. He reportedly said he knew the suspect but didn’t know his name.

While deputies were interviewing the girlfriend about the incident, the suspect called her and admitted to being the shooter while on speaker phone, the sheriff’s office said.

The arrest happened after deputies set up surveillance outside an apartment on Cherry Hill Drive in Pontiac, where they were told the suspect lived. The suspect’s mother, who was seen exiting the apartment with the suspect’s brother, gave permission to enter the residence, the sheriff’s office said, and told them he was inside with a pistol. A family member called the suspect and persuaded him to come outside without the gun, and he was then taken into custody without incident, the sheriff’s office said.

The suspect’s mother gave consent for a search of the apartment where deputies located a semi-automatic pistol, the sheriff’s office said.

The suspect is lodged in the Oakland County Jail.
