March is Women’s History Month and to celebrate, The Oakland Press is looking to give voice to women across the county.

This week, we’ll be presenting responses from women in different industries and from different walks of life to explore what it means to them to be a woman in this day and age- professionally and personally.

Jolene Chapman, dean at Oakland Community College

Q : What is your industry and job title? A : Higher Education, Dean of Engineering, Manufacturing, and Industrial Technologies at Oakland Community College

Q : How long have you been in the industry?

A : 20 years

Q : How has the professional world changed for women over the past 5 years in your eyes?

A : I’ve seen more women around the table in the last few years than I did at the beginning of my career.

Women often times bring a different perspective, and it’s refreshing to see women recognized for their views and opinions.

In the field of Engineering, Manufacturing and Industrial Technology, I am happy to see there are more women choosing to enter these fields. I am encouraged that the trend will continue.

Q : What does the current women’s movement mean to you, professionally and personally, respectively? A : I’ve been fortunate to have been shaped and mentored by some incredible women throughout my career in higher education. They have invited me to sit at the table,

encouraged me to advocate for myself and others, balanced grace with accountability, demonstrated independence, showed me the importance of setting boundaries, and taught me that it’s more important to be kind than to be right. It’s now my responsibility — and a privilege — to bring other women along up with me. Q : What defines a strong woman? A : A strong woman is independent. She is a victor, not a victim. She has standards and boundaries and values her identity.

She recognizes that appreciation and criticism are equally important to her growth. She does not shy away from difficult conversations and takes ownership of her world.

A strong woman is one who supports and lifts others up regardless of her circumstances.
