Calling all supporters of public safety and fans of heavy-duty vehicles: A “Big Truck Parade” is happening Tuesday, March 30, in Huntington Woods and Berkley.

Featuring police cars, fire trucks, DPW trucks, an ambulance and special vehicles from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, the event starts at 10 a.m. at the Huntington Woods City Hall and continues along several streets into Berkley.

“This is an opportunity to get out of the house, especially for young kids who, I hope, will be very excited,” said parade organizer Colette Nutton, manager of mirth for Huntington Woods. “Public safety and DPW have been superheroes through all the (COVID-19 pandemic), so the theme of the parade is saluting our superheroes.”

In keeping with that theme, spectators are encouraged to wear “superhero” outfits, mask up and social distance. Making and displaying signs of support is also encouraged.

Here’s the route:

• Start at Huntington Woods City Hall, 26815 Scotia Rd.

• South on Scotia to Ludlow Avenue

• East to Meadowcrest

Mile Road

• Parade continues into Berkley, down Cass Boulevard (north) to Catalpa Drive, then south down to Mortenson Boulevard

• Vehicles then return to their respective stations

Berkley Public Safety Director Matt Koehn said he’s a firm believer in the good that comes from public safety having friendly contact with residents.

“And there’s nothing better than a parade,” he said. “The residents are looking forward to it, public safety is looking forward to it. This a way to help make these times (during the COVID-19 outbreak) better — and to put smiles on faces.”
