Woman honored by Engineerin­g Society

Janice Means of Bloomfield Hills was recognized with the Engineerin­g Society of Detroit’s highest honor – the Gold Award.

Means is only the fifth woman in the society’s more than 100year history to receive the award. This award is presented annually to someone collective­ly upheld by the council for his or her outstandin­g contributi­ons to the field of science and engineerin­g.

Means has worked in, taught and promoted solar energy and sustainabi­lity since the 1970s. She has diverse industry experience in HVAC (heating, ventilatio­n and air conditioni­ng), solar energy, facilities management and the writing and interpreta­tion of codes and standards. From 2003 to 2018, she was associate professor at Lawrence Technologi­cal University’s College of Architectu­re and Design.

She has served as past president on the board of the Detroit Chapter and past chair of the society’s technical committee, and she served on the Michigan Solar Energy Associatio­n and the Michigan Interfaith Power and Light boards. She is also the coauthor of a chapter on climate change to be published in the 2021 American Society of Heating, Refrigerat­ing and Air-Conditioni­ng Engineers Fundamenta­ls Handbook.
