Woman honored by Engineering Society
Janice Means of Bloomfield Hills was recognized with the Engineering Society of Detroit’s highest honor – the Gold Award.
Means is only the fifth woman in the society’s more than 100year history to receive the award. This award is presented annually to someone collectively upheld by the council for his or her outstanding contributions to the field of science and engineering.
Means has worked in, taught and promoted solar energy and sustainability since the 1970s. She has diverse industry experience in HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning), solar energy, facilities management and the writing and interpretation of codes and standards. From 2003 to 2018, she was associate professor at Lawrence Technological University’s College of Architecture and Design.
She has served as past president on the board of the Detroit Chapter and past chair of the society’s technical committee, and she served on the Michigan Solar Energy Association and the Michigan Interfaith Power and Light boards. She is also the coauthor of a chapter on climate change to be published in the 2021 American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers Fundamentals Handbook.
