Volunteers needed to help sew quilts for veterans April 15

- By Sharon Longman

Miracle Quilts for our Wounded Troops hosts a sew-in event from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 15 at UAW Local 5960, 180 E. Silverbell Road, Lake Orion.

“This has been a rough year for us,” said Miracle Quilts founder Carole Carroll. “We just canceled our quilt show/display for the second year. It would have been a major fundraiser.”

Donations are needed for fabric, batting, thread and postage to mail the quilts.

“We are sending 100 quilts to a veteran retreat center in Alaska run by the Samaritan’s Purse nonprofit organization,” Carroll said. “Quilts are very heavy. One box with about eight to 10 quilts runs about $50 to send. … If anyone has office space they would like to donate, we (also) need heat and light to store completed quilts, fabric and batting.”

Donations are tax deductible for this 501c3 nonprofit and forms will be provided.

The organization was not able to meet for several months due to COVID-19 and has since been invited to use the UAW facility in Lake Orion. It is large, and attendees can be safely seated apart.

Volunteers must bring sewing machine, sewing a supplies and extension cords. Kits to sew will be available, and volunteers can choose to either sew-in or take home to sew. Masks are required at this event. Coffee will be provided.
