Fosmoen’s hat trick leads Lake Orion over Seaholm, 5-2

- By Michael Wallwork

The host Lake Orion Dragons got a hat trick from Annamarie Fosmoen and opened up their Oakland Activities Association White Division season with a 5-2 win over the Birmingham Seaholm Maples Friday night.

It took the Dragons and Fosmoen just one minute to get on the board as she slotted home a shot on a breakaway for an early 1-0 Lake Orion lead.

That would set a trend as most of Lake Orion’s goals came off of midfield turnovers by Seaholm that the Dragons were able to convert into breakaways in transition, including all three of Fosmoen’s goals.

The Maples tied the score at 1-1 when Macy Rothweil’s corner kick dropped in front of goal and Elena Reyes was there to knock it home with 34:29 still to play in the first half.

Both of Seaholm’s goals would come off of corner kicks as Sadie Green bent one inside the near post with 19:29 remaining in the first half, which tied the game again at 2-2.

But Fosmoen would get her second goal of the game with 12:56 remaining in the in the first half to put Lake Orion ahead for good at 3-2.

Seaholm would struggle to create chances in the second half as the Lake Orion defense anchored by Brooke Blackstock and Megan Witt shut down the Maples in the final third, holding Seaholm without a shot on goal after halftime.

Marisa Kazic and Whitney Acker would also score for Lake Orion as the Dragon counterattack ruled the day.

“We changed our system to three center backs, two wingbacks. It’s defensive but we ask a lot of the wingbacks. They have to get back. They have to get forward,” Lake Orion coach Chris Corteg said. “The key is the transition. These two (the wingbacks) then leave, join the two in midfield with the two (strikers) up top.”

Both teams were missing several key players due to COVID, and both coaches were still trying to familiarize themselves a bit with their new players after not having a season last year.

“I’m actually pleasantly surprised with the way we’re moving the ball around considering there’s only two girls on

this bench right now that have played for me. It’s hard to be disappointed. I hate to lose, but give them (Lake Orion) credit. They put the ball away when they had the opportunities, and that was probably the difference in the game,” Seaholm head coach Manuel Rodrigues said.

“We have six players out, five of which are starters,” Corteg said. “So to have these young players step up, get a couple of wins and a tie, we’re quite happy.” He added that, “In

the end, I think we’ll be a good team.”

All in all, Rodrigues was happy with his team and their potential.

“I told the girls at the end, what really impressed me was forget the score line we were still going til the last 30 seconds. Everyone was pushing, which I like to see, and that you can’t coach. That’s just the tenacity of these kids,” he said. “I just love this team. We’ve got passion, and these kids are so happy. Obviously, the times have shown this, but these kids need to be out here. It’s so much fun just to watch the fun that they are having, more than I’ve ever seen just because they haven’t played in two years.”

With the win, Lake Orion improves to 2-0-1 on the year and 1-0 in OAA White. Next up for Lake Orion is a home game against Anchor Bay on Monday.

Seaholm falls to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in OAA White. The Maples host Berkley on Monday.
