Michigan added 9,674 new coronavirus cases to the state’s soaring total over the two-day weekend and 12 deaths as the rate of people vaccinated against the deadly virus tops 40% in many areas.

The two-day totals announced Monday by the state health department pushes Michigan’s total number of cases to 747,697 and total deaths to 16,572 since the pandemic began more than a year ago.

Roughly one of every 14 state

residents has been infected with the virus, and the trend of new cases is upward even as more people receive vaccines.

In all, 3,212,019 people age 16 and older, or just shy of 40%, have received one or both shots of the vaccine, including 44.38% in Oakland County, 41.9% in Wayne County, 36.45% in Macomb County, and 22.93% in Detroit.

The highest vaccination

rate is 57.56% in Leelanau County in the northern Lower Peninsula.

However, it’s the more populated areas of southeast Michigan and other population centers around the state that are seeing case counts spike higher.

For the two-day totals

announced Monday, there were 1,113 new cases and one death in Macomb County, 1,202 cases in Wayne County, 1,098 cases in Oakland County, and 779 cases in Detroit.

In other areas of the state, the two-day totals were 515 cases and one

death in Genesee County, 307 cases and one death in Ottawa County, 287 cases and one death in Ingham County, 257 cases and one death in St. Clair County, 210 cases in Livingston County, and 132 cases and one death in Lapeer County.

In mid Michigan, the two-day totals included 35 cases in Clare County, 28 cases in Gratiot County, and 66 cases in Isabella County.

Six of Michigan’s 83 counties reported no new cases or deaths over the two-day weekend.
