The Michigan Donor Family Council, the Donate Life Coalition of Michigan, and Gift of Life Michigan are teaming up with more than 200 volunteers at five sites across Michigan today as part of the third annual Creating Comfort Blanket Party. Blankets are made by volunteers and later provided to families of new organ donors. More than 250 blankets were made during the first two events, and this year’s event sites will include Southfield’s Art Moran Buick GMC dealership, which started the cozy-hearted project. Three Michigan organizations are working with volunteers to comfort grieving families.

The Michigan Donor Family Council, the Donate Life Coalition of Michigan, and Gift of Life Michigan are teaming up with over 200 volunteers at five sites across Michigan today as part of the third annual Creating Comfort Blanket Party.

Blankets are made by volunteers and later provided to families of new organ donors.

More than 250 blankets were made during the first two events.

The goal of the third event is to make over 200 blankets.

The blanket-making started in Southfield with Art Moran Buick GMC at 29300 Telegraph Road. It is one of four sites hosting events tomorrow, along with sites in Ann Arbor, Flint and Grand Rapids.

The Flint and Grand Rapids sites need more volunteers.

Renee Menefield is a donor mother from Harrison Township. Her 8-year-old daughter died in 2009 due to a brain aneurysm.

“We chose to donate the gift of life to bless others,” Menefield said. “The comfort blanket we received was placed over our precious daughter in her final moments, and it brings me the utmost peace and comfort still to this day. So, I speak from unfortunate personal experience that these blankets bring joy to donor families.”

Tom Moran, owner of Art Moran Buick GMC, said that organ, tissue and eye donor families are “true heroes.”

“Such a simple gift as a blanket can be so comforting to these amazing people,” he said.
