A Clarkston man claims he didn’t realize two girls he had sex with were just 13 and 15 at the time, and that he’s known as a “helpful, funny guy” rather than a sexual deviant.

At a sentencing hearing via Zoom from Oakland County Circuit Court on Dec. 20, Noah Koop, 20, told Judge Daniel O’Brien that he “wasn’t being sneaky and didn’t force the situation” on the two young girls, which led to criminal sexual conduct charges against him.

“I don’t want people to think I’m this predator looking for little girls.

That’s not the case,” Koop said, prior to sentencing being handed down.

O’Brien ordered Koop to spend 74 months to 15 years in prison for the two thirddegree criminal sexual conduct charges he pleaded guilty to in November, with nearly nine months of jail credit for time spent locked up since his arrest last spring in Farmington Hills. He also was sentenced to two to four years for one count of child enticement for improper purposes.

Koop said he had a relationship with the older girl — developed in part because they had similar, unpleasant family backgrounds — and that he had loved her.

Regarding his sexual activity with the 13-year-old, Koop described it as being “in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

“I really am sorry,” he told the court. “I did not know (their ages). I swear I did not know…I’m not bull crapping you guys whatsoever.”

After listening for several minutes to Koop’s explanation for his actions, O’Brien said he was bound by sentencing guidelines. “This isn’t me getting to you,” he told Koop.

The judge denied a request for Holmes Youthful Training Act status, which would have kept the conviction off Koop’s permanent criminal record.
