Crate and Barrel to open first CB2 store in state
Crate and Barrel Holdings, a contemporary home furnishings retailer, is opening its first CB2 store in Michigan. The store will be housed in the Maplewood building in downtown Birmingham, at the northeast corner of Maple Road and North Old Woodward Avenue, according to a press release from the Birmingham Shopping District.
Crate and Barrel Holdings is a member of the Otto Group and employs 7,500 associates across Crate & Barrel and CB2 with more than 100 stores and franchise partners in nine countries, according to the company’s website.
A Crate & Barrel store is at Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi. It was previously located at Somerset Mall in Troy.
CB2 is a spin-off of the original Crate & Barrel.
“We are seeing major interest in Birmingham from the home furnishings industry. Birmingham is swiftly becoming the regional hub for this industry,” Sean Kammer, executive director of the Birmingham Shopping District, said in the press release.
“CB2 is the third national retailer that Birmingham Shopping District retail consultant, CC Consulting, has assisted in recruiting since the start of our fiscal year in July,” added Kammer.
The CB2 development in Birmingham requires relocating an existing small business, Bakehouse 46, from its current location at 136 North Old Woodward Avenue to 250 West Maple Road.
“Retaining Bakehouse 46 was a huge priority. Maintaining a balance of small businesses and national anchors is critical to ensure that downtown Birmingham remains economically resilient, diverse and attractive to all people in the region,”

The 7,500 square-foot CB2 space is expected to be completed in the fall of 2022.
Developer and landlord, Boji Group, a Michigan real estate development, property and construction management firm, plans to redevelop the entire Maplewood Building, according to the press release.
