Lineup announced for 2022 Michigan Jazz Festival

The lineup for the 27th Annual Michigan Jazz Festival, held at Schoolcraf­t College VisTaTech Center in Livonia, was announced this week.

The free one-day event kicks off at noon on Sunday, July 17, and will feature more than 40 local bands and jazz artists from Detroit and surroundin­g areas across seven different stages. Schoolcraf­t College is a principal sponsor of the annual event, which has been held at the school since 1999.

This year marks the first live, in-person event since 2019 — the 2020 event was canceled due to COVID-19 and in 2021 was presented virtually.

New to the festival this year is the Michigan Jazz Festival AllStar High School Band under the direction of Vincent Chandler.

The group will perform at 2 p.m. on the Salden Big Band Stage. Also new for 2022 are two in-person jazz education clinics. Dwight Adams — Jazz Improvisat­ion clinic (9 a.m.) and Eli Martin — Jazz Vocal Improvisat­ion clinic (11 a.m.)

• Vincent Chandler Experience Bandleader­s John Trudell, Emil Moro, and Tom Sanders created the first Michigan Jazz Festival in 1995 at Freedom Hill. The Festival moved to the Botsford Inn in 1996 and to Schoolcraf­t College in 1999.
