Union Lake Road project starts Monday

One lane of Union Lake Road, between Wise and Commerce roads in Commerce Township, will close on Monday, June 20.

On July 28, Union Lake Road is scheduled to close completely for 60 days, reopening in late September.

This is for the safety of drivers and road workers during a project to replace a culvert under the road. During the lane closure, one through lane in each direction will remain open on Union Lake Road.

Other work scheduled as part of this project includes replacing a lake-level structure next to the road; curbs and gutters in the affected road section; 200 feet of asphalt pavement; guardrails; signs; and pavement marking.

This stretch of Union Lake Road carries approximately 34,000 vehicles per day. Drivers should allow for extra travel time through this area, and long delays during peak traffic times.

People will continue having access to their homes and businesses within the construction area and to the Union Lake boat launch. During and after the project, existing Union Lake water levels will be maintained, according to road commission officials.

Once the road is closed on July 28, the through-traffic detour route will be Wise Road to Carroll Lake Road to Commerce Road and back to Union Lake Road and vice versa.

The project’s approximate cost, $780,000, is being paid by the road commission and Commerce Township.
