North Farmington senior basketball standout Ryan Hurst committed to the University of Detroit-Mercy last week, grabbing the offer from Titans head coach Mike Davis less than 24 hours after earning it.

Davis offered the prolific 6-foot-2 Hurst following North Farmington beating No. 1 Muskegon 68-55 at a showcase event on the West side of the state on Feb. 4.

Hurst led Oakland County in scoring in 2022, averaging 24 points per game. The Raiders routed to a district crown last March and Hurst ripped the nets for 36 points in less than three quarters of action in a blowout of Livonia Stevenson on North Farmington’s home court in the district title tilt. This season, he’s pumping in 21 points per night and North Farmington is 15-1 and ranked No. 2 in the state.

“I’m very happy for Ryan, this is a really good fit for him and UDM,” said North Farmington head coach Todd Negoshian of Hurst’s pledge. “Ryan is a pure natural scorer, but he’s also a great teammate. He can score at all three levels on the floor and his motor is always running.”

Davis arrived at UDM in 2018. When he coached in the Big Ten in the 2000s, he took Indiana University to the 2002 NCAA Championship Game. He led the programs at UAB and Texas Southern to NCAA Tournament bids as well.

Hurst is trying to lead North Farmington to its first trip to the MHSAA final four since 2016. Negoshian’s ’16 club fell to future Big Ten MVP Cassius Winston (Michigan State) and U-D Jesuit in the state finals at the Breslin Center.

Hurst began his high school career at West Bloomfield. His first varsity game as a freshman in December 2019, he announced his presence with authority by dropping 30-points in a win over Southfield Christian. Last season was his first at North Farmington.
