Brad Holmes on drafting a QB: ‘It has to make sense’
The Detroit Lions currently have their starting quarterback for 2023 and potentially for the foreseeable future.
Veteran Jared Goff has seriously entered the conversation to be under center for the Lions for well beyond the end of his contract, as the 28-year-old has gelled with offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.
Despite every NFL team’s hopes that leaders stay healthy, there are occasions a backup must come in and make plays.
The decisions made by teams at the backup quarterback spot could mean the difference between treading water, if a starter goes down, and a season completely falling apart.
General manager Brad Holmes has indicated the team needs to add more to the roster and especially behind Goff.
Appearing on “Good Morning Football” at the
combine, Holmes was asked about the potential of using one of their first two round picks on a quarterback.
“It just has to make sense,” Holmes said.
“Obviously, we like
Jared. He’s our starter, but we don’t have a lot behind him.
“So, we were kind of, we’re kind of going sliding into home plate at the very end of training camp, trying to find a backup quarterback.
“Nate (Sudfeld) did a nice job for us,” Holmes continued.
“We’ve had these open, transparent conversations about, ‘We’re happy with Jared. He’s our starter.
But, we need to add some pieces in that room overall.’
“So whether it’s in free agency or in the draft, we just got to get somebody to continue to develop.”

Early in the interview, host Peter Schrager quickly noticed that Detroit’s general manager was wearing a sweatshirt with “Villain” written across the middle.
When asked about the attire, Holmes expressed, “This is something that we kind of came up over time just within inside of our personnel and scouting department.
“It’s just about what we’re all about, what we’re trying to find and just the guys that fit our culture. I can’t give up too much.”
