Oakland County Veterans Resource Fair set for Feb. 15 in Wixom
The Oakland County Veterans Resource Fair is 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, Feb.
15, at the Lyon Oaks County Park Event Center, 52221 Pontiac Trail, Wixom.
Representatives will be on site to serve all veterans and their families with resources including free nonperishable food boxes and the following:
• Oakland County Veterans’ Services-will provide information and claims assistance regarding veterans benefits and give away Meijer vouchers. To be eligible, must be a veteran and Oakland County resident and must present a copy of DD214.
• Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency-Printing DD214’s on site Detroit VA Healthcare System-Offering registration help and exams for non-enrolled veterans.
• Gary Burnstein Community Health Clinic-scheduling free dental appointments.
• Oakland Community Health Network-Addressing any behavioral health issues and concerns, including behavioral health needs for children.
• Oakland County Neighborhood & Housing Development-Helping residents with housing counseling Oakland County Michigan Works! -Providing veterans and their families with career planning, training programs, job search resources and the opportunity to meet with an employment specialist.
• Oakland County Parks & Recreation-Giving out free annual vehicle permits.
• VA Suicide Prevention-Providing free gun locks.
• Ride SMART-Providing information on their veteran transportation program.

Fisher House Foundation offers scholarships for military children
The Fisher House Foundation, a nonprofit organization, builds comfort homes where military and veteran families can stay free of charge, while a loved one is in the hospital.
Fisher House created the Scholarships for Military Children Program in 2001 in partnership with the Defense Commissary Agency to recognize the contributions of military families to the readiness of the fighting force and to celebrate the commissaries’ role in enhancing the military’s quality of life.
The program intends that a scholarship funded through contributions be awarded annually at each commissary operated by the Defense Commissary Agency worldwide.
Five hundred scholarship grants, each for $2,000, will be awarded for the academic school year 2024-2025. There will be at least one recipient selected at every commissary location where qualified applications are received. Additional recipients are chosen on a prorated basis. Therefore, more applicants may be selected from those commissaries with more applicants.
The Scholarships for Military Children program is open to unmarried military dependent children under the age of 23 who possess a valid Uniformed Services Identification (USID) card.
In addition, a student’s parent(s)/sponsor(s) must be one of the following: active duty, reserve/guard, deceased, or retired from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, or Space Force.
