Lone Grove’s Lewis headed to Tennessee

HIGH SCHOOL NOTEBOOK

All-State running back Jeremy Lewis is about to join the Tennessee Volunteers this fall after it appeared the standout athlete would be headed to junior college.

Lone Grove’s Jeremy Lewis appeared headed to junior college this fall, but instead, it looks like the All-State running back is on his way to Tennessee.

Lewis rushed for 2,966 yards and 51 touchdowns as a senior, leading Lone Grove to the Class 3A semifinals.

A report from 247sports.com last week said Lewis had committed to Tennessee and was expected to join the team in time for the opening of fall camp on Aug. 1.

Lewis’ recruiting journey was a long, winding road. He committed to Arkansas State last summer over offers from Nebraska, Tulsa and Ohio, but decommitted one month before National Signing Day.

In late February, he signed with Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas.

But as long as his academics are in order, he can join a Division I school and nullify his junior-college letter of intent.

“It means something being a running back at the University of Tennessee, and I take great pride in that,” Lewis told the Daily Ardmoreite. “This is a tough conference, but that is why I came here, so I can compete every day and develop my game to the best as possible.” BUSY SUMMER FOR EDMOND NORTH’S ECKROAT Edmond North senior golfer Austin Eckroat hasn’t had much time to himself this summer, but he wouldn’t change his schedule for anything.

This week, Eckroat is in Connecticut taking part in the Wyndam Cup, a Ryder Cup-style event that pairs the top 10 junior players from the east side of the country against the top 10 from the west, dividing along the Mississippi River.

Last week, Eckroat reached the round of 16 in the U.S. Junior Amateur match play championship in Ooltewah, Tenn.

With rounds of 73-72, he qualified for the 64-player match play field as the No. 23 seed.

He won his first two matches with ease before having his momentum derailed in the third round.

“After the round of 32, I didn’t think anybody was beating me,” Eckroat said.

“I don’t know if I’ve ever hit the ball as well as I did in that round. But then I had about a 2 1/2-hour wait and I kind of lost my momentum.”

Eckroat, who has committed to Oklahoma State, has at least one more big tournament this summer, with the Junior PGA Championship next month.

Shortly after that, he’ll learn if he will be selected for the Junior Ryder Cup in September.

WESTMOORE’S MURCER IS GAINING OFFERS

Westmoore junior star Jessi Murcer has had a busy summer on the recruiting circuit, and that’s led to multiple Division I scholarship offers.

Murcer has earned offers from Arkansas, Oral Roberts and Tulsa, according to Westmoore coach Andrea Guziec.

Murcer averaged 20.9 points last season while helping Westmoore to the Class 6A state tournament.

OWASSO FRESHMAN MAKES NATIONAL TEAM

Owasso pitcher Nate Wohlgemuth, an incoming freshman, continued his steady rise without having thrown a varsity pitch.

He was recently selected to the 2016 USA Baseball 15U National Team.

He will compete with the team from July 29-Aug. 7 in Iwaki, Japan, during the WBSC U-15 World Cup.

Wohlgemuth, 15, recently competed in the Team USA Team Trials, throwing three innings in two appearances. He allowed one earned run on two hits, struck out eight and walked one.

According to reports, his fastball touched 92 mph and averaged 89 mph.
