REPORT: OLADIPO WANTS MAX MONEY

-

In the order of players to get signed long-term, Westbrook is Thunder priority No. 1.

Westbrook, however, isn’t the only one whose contract will expire after the 2016-17 season. New Thunder guard

Victor Oladipo will be a free agent, too, and he’s reportedly seeking the maximum salary, sources told ESPN’s Zach Lowe.

Under the projected 2017 salary cap ($102 million), Oladipo’s salary would jump to a little under $24 million in 2017-18 if he were to receive a maximum extension.

Oladipo is entering the final year of his rookie contract. He’ll make $6.5 million this season before hitting restricted free agency, meaning if not signed to an extension now the Thunder will be able to match any offer for him in free agency in the summer of 2017.

The Thunder has until Oct. 31 to negotiate an extension with Oladipo. That’s the deadline date to extend rookie scale contracts for players selected in the first round of the 2013 NBA Draft.

The Thunder let that deadline pass with Waiters and Reggie Jackson the last two seasons. But unlike Waiters and Jackson, Oladipo was acquired by the Thunder trading one of its core players (Serge

Ibaka). Oladipo figures to be a part of a core which includes Steven Adams and Westbrook, should Westbrook decide to re-sign with the Thunder.

Adams, Oladipo and Andre Roberson will all be restricted free agents next summer, with Adams expected to be worth max money as well. Those impending contract negotiations may be one reason the Thunder bypassed taking on excess salary in free agency this offseason, opting instead to bring back Anthony Morrow ($3.4 million) and sign Alex Abrines (close to $6 million) at relative bargain deals.
