Scouting Texas

2016 record: 2-1 (0-0 in the Big 12); coming off a bye week. Best player: Malik Jefferson, a consensus Freshman All-American and the Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year in 2015, is a versatile playmaking linebacker. He finished second on the team in tackles a year ago and is one off the lead this season.

The case for the Longhorns: Texas always wins in Stillwater. Well, almost always; in every trip since 1997 anyway. These Longhorns arrive with a Baylor-styled spread offense that has so far averaged 500.3 yards and 44.7 points per game. They’ll surely salivate at watching the success Baylor’s receivers had Saturday night.

The case for the Cowboys: Texas seemed to have a statement win when it outlasted Notre Dame 50-47 in double overtime in the season opener. But the Irish have since been revealed as lacking, losing to Michigan State and Duke since. And the Longhorns defense has been found lacking as well, the culprit in a 50-43 loss at Cal, the team’s last time out. As the week begins, the job status of defensive coordinator Vance Bedford — OSU’s one-time DC — is in question.
