Tech center honor society holds fundraiser
CHOCTAW — Members of Eastern Oklahoma County Technology Center’s National Technical Honors Society raised money by serving a Christmas lunch.
NTHS members helped prepare the chicken and steak meal and served faculty and staff on Dec. 16. The lunch is the chapter’s only fundraiser and helps pay for the state leadership conference, as well as their induction ceremony in April.
Sixty to 90 members are inducted into the chapter every year, and inductees must be of good academic standing.
“In order to be a member, students must meet a certain criteria,” said Janna Gaddis, math instructor and chapter leader.
“Students must hold an A average for two consecutive nine weeks, obtain a teacher recommendation, be a member of another student organization, like Skills USA, and have no more than three absences for the two nine weeks.”
Gaddis said the guidelines will benefit members in their future endeavors.
“Being inducted in the NTHS chapter prepares them for leadership roles, it represents good academic standing and good attendance,” Gaddis said. “It also shows outstanding integrity because they have to be recommended by a teacher. If they have an A in their classes but don’t show good citizenship, they can’t be an NTHS member.”
Not only do students benefit during their high school education from NTHS, but that benefit continues into their college education.
“The national office gives scholarships to students,” Gaddis said. “Also, students can submit information to a databank that employers are able to look at. If the student says they want to be contacted by potential employers, their information can be released to them and the employers can contact them about a potential job.”
Those involved in organizing the lunch were pleased with the turnout and the amount brought in from the fundraiser.
“We had a nice turnout with the majority of staff taking part in the fundraiser,” test administrator Doris King said. “The staff at BancFirst of Jones has always been a big supporter and this year staff from BancFirst of Choctaw took part, as well.”
